Online voting for the 2009 ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) Awards has already started. ESPYs as it is popularly known is an annual sports event created by TV network ESPN honoring various individuals and teams for their achievements.

For this year’s edition, Pinoy boxing hero Manny Pacquiao is nominated for two categories.

For winning against Oscar dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton and becoming only the 2nd six-division world champion (after dela Hoya), he was nominated for the Best Fighter Award. The award is presented to the best professional boxer or mixed martial arts fighter, irrespective of nationality or weight class. Other nominees were boxer Shane Mosley and MMA fighters Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva.

For his 2nd-round KO over Hatton, Pacquiao is also nominated for the Best Play Award. The award is presented to the single play or performance, irrespective of sport contested or gender of participating sportsperson, adjudged to be the most remarkable, significant, or impressive. Other nominees were Ovechkin’s goal vs the New York Rangers  (professional hockey), Roethlisberger to Holmes Super Bowl winning TD (professional football) and Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree’s game-winning catch vs Texas (college football).

Online voting will close on July 11, 2009  and the 2009 ESPY Awards is set on July 19 at Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles California to be hosted by actor Samuel L. Jackson. It is just adjacent to the Staples Center, the homecourt of the 2009 NBA Champions LA Lakers.
