A Michael Jackson memorial service will be held today, July 7, 2009 at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, California, USA. It will start on 12:00 PM Eastern Time. This will be Jacko’s “Final Curtain Call”. AEG Live will host the musical memorial extravaganza dedicated to the “King of Pop”.

Entertainers expected to be in attendance are:  Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Mariah Carey, Usher, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Hudson, Brooke Shields, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, Smokey Robinson, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston and John Mayer. The world of sports will be represented by Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant. Civil rights leader Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III will also be there.

On the other hand, Michael Jackson’s wife Debbie Rowe will not attend as well as Elizabeth Taylor.

More than 1.5 million people applied in an online lottery held over the weekend to win 8,750 pairs of free tickets for the public memorial. It was the equivalent of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets with the odds of being chosen about 1 in 183. The venue can only accommodate up to 20,000 people. The remaining slots are reserved for Michael Jackson’s friends and family as well as other guests. Los Angeles police officers are worried about the massive influx of people that will flock the site.

Here in the Philippines, ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) and Studio 23 will broadcast the Michael Jackson memorial service live on July 8, 2009 from 12:30 AM to 2:00 AM. It will be titled “Paalam Michael Jackson”. Ces Drilon and Gary Valenciano will anchor the coverage. GMA 7 will also hold a similar coverage titled “Michael Jackson: Isang Pamamaalam” to be hosted by Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales, with live reports from Kara David.
