UFC 105 | The Natural Wins a Controversial Decision Against The TruthCategory: MMA
In the main event of UFC 105: Couture vs Vera on November 14, 2009 at Manchester Evening News Arena, Manchester, England; Randy “The Natural” Couture faces off against Brandon “The Truth” Vera.
At UFC 102, Couture was defeated by former PRIDE Heavyweight and UFC Interim Heavyweight champion, Antonio “Minotauro” Rodrigo Nogueira. He was previously knocked-out by current UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 91.
Because of that two consecutive losses at the heavyweight division, Couture decided to go down to the light-heavyweight division where he will face Vera.
Brandon Vera is the most accomplished UFC fighter with Filipino blood. He is a former WEC Heavyweight champion who himself moved to the light-heavyweight division after successive defeats from the hands of Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum. He has now won two consecutive bouts with the recent one against Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 102.
In Couture, Vera is facing a legend. A Hall of Famer who is one of only two UFC fighters to have held a championship title in two different divisions (heavyweight and light heavyweight) as well as the only five-time champion in UFC history. Couture has been known to overcome fighters much younger than he is and much bigger.
Couture is a great wrestler and “ground and pound” fighter. Vera on the other hand is an effective kickboxer who has already battled it out with the best in two divisions.
I predict a win by Vera via decision.
NOTE: In a surprising unanimous decision, all three judges gave Randy Couture a 29-28 victory over Brandon Vera after a fight in which Vera did most of the effective stand-up striking.
