This is why there can never be another Manny Pacquiao.
Touted as the next in the long line of Filipino boxers groomed to follow the footsteps of the greatest Filipino boxer, Marvin Sonsona delivered a disappointing performance not worthy of comparison to even the Pacman’s worst.
Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona became the second youngest Filipino world champion in history after defeating WBO Junior Bantamweight champion Jose Lopez of Puerto Rico last September at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario, Canada.
Just two months later, Sonsona made his first title defense against Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico in the main event of Rumble at Rama X at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario, Canada on November 21, 2009. Yes, the same place where he captured his WBO bantamweight belt.
But in the morning weigh-in, Sonsona failed to make weight when he tipped the scales at 117.6 lbs; 2.6 lbs above the 115 lbs bantamweight limit. His handlers advised him not to shed the excess poundage to preserve his strength for the fight.
Consequently, he was stripped of his WBO Junior Bantamweight belt. Because of this, Marvin Sonsona now holds the record of the shortest boxing title reign by a Filipino after only 2 months and 17 days. He broke the previous record of 2 months and 25 days by Roberto Cruz in 1963.
The worse is yet to come as in the evening, Sonsona was lucky to have managed a draw against the very determined Alejandro Hernandez via scores of 115-113, 113-115 and 114-114.
Sonsona is still undefeated with 14 wins (12 via KO). He plans to move up to the next weight division.
Here’s the Marvin Sonsona vs Alejandro Hernandez video of the fight:

I think he needs to discipline himself. He can’t reach Manny Pacquiao’s status if he don’t learn from this mistake.

Kumpiyansa nga talaga. Di ko rin alam ano ang nangyari sa kanya. Very promising pa naman sana.

that was really disappointing!
Dapat munang matutunan ng mga boksingero natin ang disiplina bago nila pangarapin na maging katulad ni manny.
Manny has indeed the talent like most of our boxers, but his work ethics and discipline made him the legend of them all.

Well, in fairness to Sonsona, pinagdaanan din ni Manny ang ganito.
After nia napanalunan ang WBC flyweight belt against Chatchai Sasakul, sa 2nd defense nia against 3K Battery, overweight din siya sa 112 lbs. limit. At naKO siya in the 3rd Round.
What’s good however for him is that he learned from his mistakes and he became one of the most disciplined fighters I have known come training time.
Yan ang dapat matutunan ni Marvin Sonsona.
