Why is Popeye on Google?
That’s what you might ask if you happen to visit Google’s home page today. Its logo is replaced by a doodle of Popeye the Sailor Man about to eat his fill of spinach.
You will find the answer if you hover your mouse over it. It says, E.C. Segar’s birthday. When you click it, you will be directed to the search results page for the name E.C. Segar. But who the hell is E.C. Segar?
His full name is Elzie Crisler Segar. He is Popeye’s creator and it just happens to be his 115th birthday today.
Segar was born in Chester, Illinois, USA on December 8, 1894.
Popeye first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929.
To find out more about the man and his creation, check out their Wikipedia entries: E.C. Segar and Popeye.
