While New Yorkers were waiting for the ball drop at Times Square, 20,000 spectators at Long Beach, California were eagerly anticipating a daredevil stunt by Travis Pastrana, this generation’s Evil Knievel.
On December 31, 2009, at 8:00 PM Pacific Time, Pastrana broke the world record for the longest jump in a rally car by leaping 269 feet over Rainbow Harbor in his Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car; breaking the previous 171 ft record set by teammate Ken Block in November 2006.
The stunt is part of Red Bull’s New Year, No Limits series.
Here’s the video of the world record jump:
Travis Pastrana is widely known as an X Games gold medalist for several events as supercross, motocross, freestyle motocross, and rally racing. He was the first man to perform the Double Back flip on a motorcycle in competition scoring a 98.60, doing it at the Best Trick competition at the 2006 X Games.
