This January 23, 2010 in HBO’s presentation of Boxing After Dark, Yuriorkis Gamboa of Cuba will put his WBA Featherweight Championship belt on the line against challenger Roger “The Tiger” Mtagwa of Tanzania.

This 12-round bout will be held at the Wamu Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York, USA.

Gamboa is undefeated in 16 bouts and 14 of those were via knockout. As an amateur boxer, he won an Olympic gold medal in the flyweight division at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He won the WBA Featherweight crown against Jose Rojas on April 17, 2009 via 10th Round TKO.

His bout with Mtagwa will be his second defense of the title.

Mtagwa has a career record of 26 wins (18 KOs), 13 losses and 2 draws. Unimpressive may be but don’t let that record fool you.

In his bout with Juan Manuel Lopez on October 2009, he gave the champion a beating in the latter rounds and almost pulled-off an upset. Lopez racked up enough points in the early rounds to survive a decision win.

Here in the Philippines, ABS-CBN will air the Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Rogers Mtagwa bout on Sunday, January 24.
