In the previous episode of 24, Renee Walker is introduced for the first time since Season 7. While she is not an FBI agent anymore, she is welcomed back to CTU because of her knowledge of the Russian Syndicate in New York after having worked with them as an undercover six years before.

Despite Jack Bauer not agreeing to this plan, he volunteered to be her partner in this operation.

We also saw how Renee has become bolder with her actions when she saws off Ziya’s (her contact in the mob) left thumb to the remove the monitoring device attached to his arm.
