The Super Bowl is one of the largest sporting events in the US.
This February 7, 2010 at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, USA, Super Bowl XLIV will be held.
Two National Football League (NFL) teams will battle it out for The Vince Lombardi Trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winner; the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Indianapolis Colts and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New Orleans Saints.
Indianapolis Colts
The Colts won four NFL championships (three NFL Championships in 1958, 1959, 1968; and Super Bowl V in 1971) while in Baltimore. Since moving to Indianapolis, they won Super Bowl XLI in 2007. Also since 1998, the team has become the first in league history to win 12 games or more in five consecutive seasons—extending this record to seven after the 2009 season.
The team stormed to an NFL best 14-2 record on their way to earning their second Super Bowl appearance in the last four years spearheaded by 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Peyton Manning, who threw for 4,500 yards and 33 touchdowns during the season, with only 16 interceptions, earning him a 99.9 passer rating and a league record fourth National Football League Most Valuable Player Award.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints finished the season with an NFC best 13-3 record and went on to advance to the first Super Bowl in their 43 years as an NFL team. The 2009 season was the team’s best season. After becoming 13–0 with their win over the Atlanta Falcons, it marked the Saints’ best start to a season in its franchise history. The result clinched an NFC playoff berth, a bye in the first round of the playoffs. By winning their first 13 games, the Saints also set the record for the longest undefeated season opening (13-0) by an NFC team since the AFL–NFL merger, eclipsing the previous record (12-0) held by the 1985 Chicago Bears.
The team has superstar Drew Brees on its backyard. Brees finished the season as the NFL’s top rated quarterback (109.6), completing an NFL-record 70.6% of his passes for 4,338 yards and 34 touchdowns, with just 11 interceptions.
