KryptoNate Becomes First 3-Time NBA Slam Dunk Champ

Category: Basketball

Nate “KryptoNate” Robinson successfully defended the crown he captured when he jumped over the 6’11” Dwight “Superman” Howard in last year’s Sprite Slam Dunk contest.

In this year’s NBA Slam Dunk Contest 2010 edition, Nate despite standing only 5 feet and 9 inches becomes the first 3-time winner of the annual dunk contest.

He faced Gerald Wallace, Shannon Brown and DeMar DeRozan in a not so entertaining dunk contest. Perhaps, if it were the Lebrons, Kobes and Wades fans were hoping, we were in for a thrilling ride.

Geral Wallace of the Charlotte Bobcats is the Runner-up in the 2002 Dunk contest. An outstanding leaper and one of the NBA’s best athletes, Wallace is known for his ferocious dunks.

Shannon Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers was included due in large part to his fan’s grassroots support with the web site

DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors beat Eric Gordon of the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk-In, a single-round slam dunk competition held at halftime of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam on Friday, February 12 to advance to the Sprite Slam Dunk the following night.

In their first dunks, all dunkers performed ho-hum dunks. Expectations were particularly high for Shannon Brown but he failed his supporters who rallied for his inclusion in the Slam Dunk Contest with the web site

Finally, DeRozan woke up the crowd in his second try when he took a pass from team mate Sonny Weems off the side of the backboard, caught the ball on one side of the rim and dunked on the other. It earned him a perfect score of 50 from the judges.

And so it was Nate Robinson and DeMar DeRozan in the championship round. It was a close round but Robinson got off with 51% of fan voting via text messaging and the Internet to become the first three-time dunk contest champion. Robinson’s pass off the backboard for a double-pump reverse dunk helped his cause.

Personally, I think it was a very forgettable dunk contest. They should let Taurian Fontenette and his 720 dunk in next year.

[…] Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown seemed to be the real Sprite Slam Dunk Contest when the performances of the losers at the former are more entertaining and spectacular than that […]

Haha, I don’t think so. It would like be a punch to their egos if those so-called NBA ‘dunkers’ are to be replaced by amateur dunkers.
