Hollywood director Tim Burton has another treat for us.
From the man who brought us dark and quirky-themed movies such as Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street comes another odd movie, Alice in Wonderland.
It is the 2010 rehash of the Lewis Carroll novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
Alice in Wonderland stars the equally eccentric and Tim Burton favorite, actor Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Their constant collaboration reminds me of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio who has Shutter Island as their latest project.
Based on the Alice in Wonderland trailers and video clips I have seen, the movie combines live action and animation. Just like James Cameron’s Avatar, it is full of eye-candy treats that will wow not only the kids but their daddy and mommy as well. The movie is visually stunning!
Tim Burton really gave justice to the peculiar Alice in Wonderland characters that appear in it.
Alice in Wonderland is written by Linda Woolverton, and also stars Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Michael Sheen and Stephen Fry. The movie is set to be released in cinemas on March 4 (Australia) and on March 5, 2010 (the U.S and UK) through Walt Disney Pictures in 3-D and IMAX 3-D, as well as in regular theaters.
SYNOPSIS (from Wikipedia):
Alice Kingsley, now 19, attends a party at a Victorian estate shortly after the death of her beloved father. Alice spots a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch. In shock and confusion, she runs off into a maze and follows the White Rabbit through it. She eventually tumbles down a rabbit hole into Underland, more commonly referred to as “Wonderland” by its inhabitants. She had visited this place 10 years earlier, but had entirely forgotten about it. She is also told that she is the only one who can slay the Jabberwock, the dragon who terrorizes the inhabitants of Wonderland under the rule of the Red Queen.

The acting was decent but not awesome. It’s hard to acknowledge but Johny Depp is getting older and his acting skill rapidly running low. His acting wasn’t as innovative as it used to be. Instead of a true Mad Hatter he just showed Jack Sparrow in a red wig and made-up face. Mia Wasikowska also wasn’t the best choice for the Alice role. Her acting style just doesn’t fit with the real Alice character and besides, she hasn’t got enough acting experience to play the part effectively. The only one really stunning bit of acting was demonstrated by Helena Bonham Carter who played Red Queen. As for the rest, acting didn’t impress me at all.

I saw the midnight showing of Alice In Wonderland. Although the performances were great, and the animation was really cool (I love how they did the Cheshire Cat), I was not pleased with the script. It wasn’t very developed, and it was kinda boring. I still enjoyed the movie, though.
