Just as we all thought we have already seen the best Manny Pacquiao has to offer in his demolition of bigger fighters like David Diaz, Oscar dela Hoya and Miguel Cotto, we were wrong.
At the 1:37 mark of the 4th round in his bout with Joshua Clottey, Pacquiao let loose his new ultimate super weapon, the cymbals “pompyang” punch. It’s just like a video game player executing the Konami code to unleash the “finishing move” to an opponent.
Ok… that punch wasn’t really Pacman’s best punch nor did it even finished Clottey.
However, in an event that featured Manny unleashing his combos for 12 rounds on a $3 million punching bag, it provided comic relief on an otherwise boring match.
It was the first time somebody used that in a professional boxing match.
Manny must be a fan of old-school cinema as the “pompyang punch” (so-called because it resembles clapping cymbals) is often used by Action King Fernando Poe, Jr. in his movie fight sequences like this one with Agimat King Ramon Revilla, Sr.
Apparently, coach Freddie Roach knows that Pacquiao has it in his arsenal.
“He does it in a gym all the time. I don’t think there’s been a guy he ever sparred with he didn’t try it on, and Steve Forbes, in this camp, was the first guy who’d even retaliated. When he talked about doing it in a fight I warned him ‘Manny, don’t even think about it, because they’ll take a point away if you do.’”
To which Pacquiao replied:
“No they won’t. The first time I do it they’ll just warn me.”
Roach concludes:
“In gym sparring, or in amateur bouts, the technique can be downright dangerous, since catching an opponent wearing tight-fitting headgear on both ear-holes at once could easily rupture an eardrum, but I frankly don’t understand why it should be illegal in a professional fight. “I’ve asked a bunch of people and never gotten a good answer. Think about it: all you’re doing is throwing two punches at the same time. I can’t think of any rule that says you can’t do that.”
Watch Manny Pacquiao’s cymbals “pompyang” punch below:
If that move wasn’t illegal, Clottey is probably deaf by now with the constant banging of “pompyang” by Pacquiao on his ears.

Di rin siguro. Talagang may plano si Manny gawin un. Loko din talaga ito sa Manny. Anlaki nga ng ngisi nia kay Clottey eh after siya sinita ng referee.
