Blue Devils Trumped Bulldogs in NCAA FinalsCategory: Basketball
The Butler Bulldogs don’t seem like they belong here but they do.
After all, this is the team’s first appearance in the NCAA championship game and they never even had been to the Elite Eight before this season. And their school, Butler University is a small private school with just over 4,000 students.
But this is also a team that hasn’t lost a game since December 22, 2009 and has amassed a 25-game winning streak with a 32-4 win-loss record for the season. The Bulldogs won the 2010 Horizon League Men’s Basketball Tournament to receive the Horizon’s automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament, earning a #5 seed in the West Region.
In the March Madness, they have beaten West Region’s #1 seed Syracuse in the Sweet Sixteen round and #2 seed Kansas State in the Elite Eight. In the Final Four round, they squeaked a win over Michigan State in a battle of #5 seeds with a score of 52-50 to set up an NCAA championship game against the South Region’s #1 seed, the Duke Blue Devils.
The Duke Blue Devils on the other hand is the fourth-winningest men’s basketball program of all-time. Duke has won three NCAA championships and appeared in 15 Final Fours. Eleven players have been named the National Player of the Year, while 71 players have been drafted in the NBA Draft.
The team’s success has been particularly outstanding over the past 25 years under coach Mike Krzyzewski (often simply called “Coach K”) who also has coached the USA men’s national basketball team since 2006 and led to team to Olympic gold in 2008.
With a regular season record of 34 wins and 5 losses, the team was seeded #1 for the South Region after topping the ACC Tournament. In the March Madness, they have beaten Purdue in the Sweet Sixteen round and Baylor in the Elite Eight. In the Final Four round, they steamrolled West Virginia 78-57.
Duke vs Butler in the 2010 NCAA Tournament championship game will be the first title game between private schools in 25 years (when Villanova and Georgetown met in 1985) and the fifth such matchup in history (1942, 1954, and 1955 were the other years).
This is a winner-take-all-blink-and-your-done game on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Duke is lead by guard Jon Scheyer, a 2009–10 consensus All-American (Second Team) and is a finalist for the Wooden Award.
Butler is led by guard/forward Gordon Hayward, the 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year and the NCAA Tournament’s MVP of the West Region.
