Paul the Octopus is a common octopus living in a tank at a Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany.
But he is not your typical common octopus as he is actually an oracle.
Amusing as it may seem, he have predicted 12 international football matches that featured the German National Team and in 10 of them, he was right. That’s 83.33% accurate!
It’s also amazing to know that in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he correctly predicted that Germany will win against Australia, Serbia, Ghana, England and Argentina. He was also correct in predicting that Germany will lost to Spain in the semifinals.
After hearing that the octopus predicted that lone loss, it angered Hitler so much that he wants to have it killed.
So, how does Paul the octopus predicts the outcome of the matches?
He is presented with two clear plastic boxes. Each contains a mussel or an oyster, and is marked with the flag of a national football team in an upcoming match. The box which Paul opens first (and eats the contents of) is judged to be the predicted winner of the game.
In Germany’s battle with Uruguay for third-place on July 10, Paul predicts that Germany will win.
He better be correct or the Fuhrer will make a sushi out of him.
He also predicts Spain to win against the Netherlands on the final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on July 11.
