When Frankie Edgar met BJ Penn in the co-main event of UFC 112 last April 10, 2010 at Abu Dhabi, no one gave him a chance to win.
After all, Penn has defended his UFC lightweight title three consecutive times against top competition: Sean Sherk, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez.
Penn is also regarded at that time as the #1 lightweight in the world and was only the second fighter to win UFC titles in two different weight classes (Randy Couture is the other).
After the three-round match, the judges’ scorecards tell the story. Edgar defeated BJ Penn by unanimous decision in a bout that was so lopsided that one judge even gave him a score of 50-45! The other judges scored it 49-46 and 48-47.
Edgar’s performance merited him a nomination for the 2010 ESPY Upset of the Year.
The award is presented to the sportsperson or team, irrespective of gender or sport contested, adjudged to have completed the best, most impressive, or most significant upset in a given year.
Other nominees include:
* Hawaii softball upsets #1 Alabama, NCAA Softball
* Northern Iowa shocks No. 1 Kansas, NCAA Men’s Basketball
* Y. E. Yang stuns Tiger Woods, PGA Championship
