The LA Lakers three-peat quest begins!

In the 2008-09 NBA season, the purple and gold team defeated the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals 4-1 on the way to its 15th NBA title while giving Kobe Bryant his 1st Finals MVP Award and 4th championship ring and Phil Jackson his record 10th title as a coach.

Last year’s title quest was not a walk in the park as they faced the Boston Celtics in a rematch of their 2008 NBA Finals series won by the greens. In a hard-fought series, the Lakers beat their old rivals in a thrilling 83-79 Game 7 to win their fifth NBA Championship in 11 seasons, their 16th overall and 11th in Los Angeles while giving Kobe Bryant his 2nd consecutive Finals MVP Award and 5th championship ring.

For this NBA season, its core players remain intact in Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest and Derek Fisher while acquiring new cogs in Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff.

The coach remains the same in Zen master, Phil Jackson.

Since Jackson’s championships usually comes in three (Chicago Bulls 91-93, Chicago Bulls 96-98, LA Lakers 2000-2002), will it follow that the LA Lakers win this year’s as well?
