Pacquiao vs Margarito Generates 1.15 Million Buys and $64 Million RevenueCategory: Boxing
Although the figures were below Top Rank chairman Bob Arum’s prediction, the recent Pacquiao vs Margarito bout is still a huge success as it has generated at least 1.15 million PPV buys and $64 million revenue according to an announcement today by Mark Taffet, the senior vice president of sports operations and pay-per-view at HBO.
With that result, Manny Pacquiao became the first boxer in history since Mike Tyson to generate at least one million buys for a fight in three consecutive years.
His fight with Oscar dela Hoya in 2008 sold 1.25 million and 1.2 million with Miguel Cotto in 2009.
His March 2010 bout with Joshua Clottey generated only 700,000 buys but it was because Clottey is a virtual unknown.
Even so, Pacquiao’s past five pay-per-view bouts have sold a combined 5.1 million; a “true measure of his pay-per-view superstar status” says Taffet.
The all-time record is still held by the Mayweather vs dela Hoya fight in 2007 which recently surpassed 2.45 million.
If Pacquiao vs Mayweather will ever push through, there’s a good chance that it will break that record.
Now, let’s see how this will fare.
