Cleveland Cavaliers Win 2011 NBA Draft LotteryCategory: Basketball
In 2003, the Cleveland Cavaliers won the first pick in the NBA Draft Lottery.
We all know who they picked.
However, after 7 seasons highlighted by a 2007 NBA Finals appearance, Lebron James decided to bring his talents to South Beach in a very controversial announcement on ESPN named, “The Decision”.
Despite owner Dan Gilbert’s claim of winning an NBA championship before the King wins one, the Cavaliers finished the 2010-11 season with the second worst record with 19 wins and 63 losses; giving them the second best chance on the number pick in the NBA Draft lottery with a .199 percentage chance.
That chance was boosted to 22.7% after obtaining the Los Angeles Clippers’ pick (2.8%) in a midseason deal involving Baron Davis.
In the NBA Draft Lottery held on May 17, 2011 in Secaucus, New Jersey, USA, the Cavaliers will have a boost on their rebuilding process post-Lebron James era when it won the first pick. As luck would have it, they also won the fourth pick.
The Minnesota Timberwolves who has the highest chance to get the first overall pick after finishing with a league worst-record 17-65 got the second pick. It’s the seventh straight year the team with the best chance to win didn’t land the top pick in the NBA draft. Not since 2004, when the Orlando Magic picked Dwight Howard, has the team with the worst record picked first in the draft.
The NBA Draft Lottery is an annual event by the NBA in which the teams who had missed the playoffs participate in a lottery process to determine the draft order in the NBA Draft. The lottery winner would get the first selection in the draft.
