Category: Boxing

MATCHUP: Yuriorkis “El Ciclon de Guantánamo” Gamboa vs Daniel “El León” Ponce de Leon

DATE: September 10, 2011

VENUE: Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States

FIGHT DETAILS: Gamboa is promoted by Top Rank and Ponce de Leon by Golden Boy, marking the first time in years that the two U.S. giants will work together on a card. This is a non-title fight.

Cuban Gamboa (20 wins – 0 losses, 16 KOs) is the current Unified IBF and WBA Featherweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist in the flyweight division at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

His last fight was against Jorge Solis where he won via knockout in the 4th Round.

Mexican Ponce de Leon (41 wins – 3 losses, 34 KOs) is the former WBO World Super Bantamweight champion and current WBC Latino Featherweight champion.

RESULT: Round after round, Gamboa beat Ponce de Leon to the punch and racked up the points. Lead right hands, left hooks, body shots, combinations — you name it, Gamboa landed it. The fight ultimately was short-circuited at 1 minute, 24 seconds of the eighth round after an accidental head-butt left Mexico’s Ponce De Leon, 31, with a cut over his left eye, near his nose.

It didn’t look too bad, and the bleeding was quickly stopped after referee Alan Huggins called it off on the advice of the ringside doctor — although Ponce De Leon didn’t appear to want to continue, and didn’t protest the stoppage one iota.
