In a game against the Houston Rockets today, Kevin Love had 25 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 100-91 win.
However, it was not his impressive stat line that will be most remembered.
In a “heat-of-the-moment” type play as Love himself said, he stepped on Luis Scola’s face as the Rockets center went down to the floor after a play.
It is definitely a cheap shot on Love’s part if that was intentional. While Love himself apparently denied any malicious intent, and reportedly apologized to Scola after the game, it was obvious from the video that he know Scola was lying there and could have avoided him.
NBA officials will reportedly review the play and Love might get suspended for his unsportsmanlike behavior.
The fourth year forward-center has been sensational this season averaging 25 points and 13.5 rebounds per game and is definitely a shoo-in to participate in his second consecutive NBA All-Star Game as a reserve.
UPDATE February 6, 2012: The NBA has suspended Love for two games for “driving his foot into the upper body and face of the Rockets’ Luis Scola as Scola was lying on the floor.”
Love has released a statement following the suspension:
“I want to publicly apologize to Luis Scola and the Houston Rockets. My intention is to never hurt another player on the basketball court. I’ve always had the utmost respect for the game of basketball and all of my opponents. I also apologize to my coaches, teammates and our fans for the consequences of my actions.”
