The biggest sporting event in the USA will be held this year for the first time in Indianapolis, at the Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, February 5, 2012.
This will be the first time in the history of the game it will be played in consecutive years in a retractable roof stadium and only the fourth time that the Super Bowl is played in a cold-weather city.
It will be the 42nd annual championship game of the modern-era NFL. It is, the Super Bowl XLVI!
Two National Football League (NFL) teams will battle it out for The Vince Lombardi Trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winner; the American Football Conference (AFC) champion New England Patriots and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New York Giants.
New England Patriots
An original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of those leagues. The team advanced to the playoffs four times before appearing in Super Bowl XX in January 1986, losing to the Chicago Bears. The team also appeared in Super Bowl XXXI in January 1997, losing to the Green Bay Packers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the 2011 season with a 13–3 record. They earned the AFC East division title, and the first seed in the AFC and advanced to their 7th Super Bowl after defeating #2 seed Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game 23-20.
New York Giants
The Giants were one of five teams that joined the NFL in 1925, but the only one admitted that year which still exists. The team ranks third among all NFL franchises with seven NFL titles: four in the pre–Super Bowl era (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956) and three since the advent of the Super Bowl (Super Bowls XXI (1986), XXV (1990), and XLII (2007). Their championship tally is surpassed only by the Green Bay Packers (13) and Chicago Bears (9).
The New York Giants finished the season with a 9-7 record returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2008, when they won the NFC East and finished the season as the NFC’s #4 seed. They defeated the #2 seed San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game 20-17.
