Today’s Google Doodle: Charles Dickens’ 200th BirthdayCategory: News
Today is Charles Dickens’ 200th birthday.
To honor the greatest English novelist of the Victorian era, Google is honoring him with a doodle of characters from his works.
Who would not know Ebenezer Scrooge? The grumbling old man in “A Christmas Carol”. There’s also Tiny Tim, Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit, Oliver Twist, The Artful Dodger, Fagin, Bill Sikes, David Copperfield, among others.
Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 at Landport, in Portsea, England.
Dickens’s work has been highly praised for its realism, comedy, mastery of prose, unique personalities and concern for social reform by writers such as Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell and G. K. Chesterton; though others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, have criticised it for sentimentality and implausibility.
