Isn’t it annoying that at the end of the day, even if you got 100 clicks, you only made $1? Yes, one f*cking dollar!

Not all Adsense ads are created equal. The Adsense publishers that give you that low are usually those that have Adsense on their site too. They purchase ads through Adwords, have it published at other sites and when somebody clicks on it, they are brought to their own site that contains nothing but high-paying Adsense ads. In other words, they pay 1 cent in order to make 10 cents or higher.

Those are called MFA (Made for Adsense) sites. And it’s about time to get rid of those low-paying clicks.

Adsense actually has a built-in tool called the Competitive Ad Filter to help you with this.

The Competitive Ad Filter enables you to block specific ads, such as competitors’ ads, from appearing on your pages. Entering a more general URL will block a wider range of ads; entering a more specific URL will block a smaller range of ads. For example, by entering a top level domain such as “example.com”, you’ll also block all ads that link to any sub-directories of that domain, like “forums.example.com”. Review the examples below to learn how you can create filters that will block only the range of ads you want.

To access it, log in to your Adsense account > Adsense Setup tab > Competitive Ad Filter.

In the AdSense for Content filters box, you can enter those ads. Up to 500 is allowed.

So, how do I determine what ads to input?

You can register at Adsblacklist, enter your web site and get a list of  low-paying ads related to your site’s content.

If you want to avoid the hassle and don’t mind even if the ads are not related to your site’s content, you can just copy my list below:

Hit the Save changes button and you’re good to go. The changes should take effect in a few hours.

One word of caution though, it might be possible that due to many blocked ads, your site may show Public Service ads if no relevant ads are available.

Based on experience however, the benefits of using the Competitive Ad Filter far outweighs this consequence.

Although the claim that it is supposed to boost awareness on the campaign against child abuse is being reputed, with some even saying that the entire scheme is a hoax, it did not stop Facebook users from having a little fun. It’s nostalgia time.

Some even changed their profile pictures daily into various cartoon characters from their childhood, from Bugs Bunny to Mickey Mouse to He-Man to Homer  Simpson to Beavis and Butthead to Smurf to Scooby Doo.

However, if you want to be different. You can change your own profile picture into cartoons.

There are many online sites that will do the job. Simply upload the picture and the conversion will be done automatically.

Aside from providing proof and credibility (see How To Play Snake at YouTube or My First Taste of Google Juice, How Sweet It Is), it makes your website not dull and boring (see Transformers 2: List of Autobots or Swine Flu Face Mask Designs).

One way to create an image is to simply capture what’s on your screen. The conventional way to do it would be to use the Print Screen key and dumping the  screenshot into Paint.

However,  that is too tedious and you can’t even capture the mouse pointer that way. The best way to do it would be to use a screen capture software.

One of the best there is is ScreenHunter.

It is a free tool which can be easily customized. With just one press of a key (which you can set), you can either capture the whole screen or just portions of it. You can also set the file type of the output (.bmp, .jpg or .gif), the saved location and even auto-rename the image.

With ScreenHunter, I can now capture that elusive mouse pointer like what I did here and here.

A website can’t be called as such if it has no links. Links direct readers to any part of your site. Think of it as a map.

It can also provide a rich experience for them if you provide links of websites related to your articles.

As such, it is important to check your links from time to time. Because sometimes, links become broken due to several factors: expired domains, deletion or you just simply wrote the wrong link in the first place.

Broken links can be frustrating for a reader when they click on it and directed to a 404 or “Page Not Found” webpage.

SEO-wise, broken links can make your website’s ranking factor go down as search engines will consider your site as still being “under construction” since the spiders (or bots) will not be able to crawl your website completely. Those that they tagged as such usually are not given high rank in the SERPs (search engine results page).

Google’s Webmaster Guidelines even specifically tells us to “Check for broken links and correct HTML.”

If your site has hundreds of posts, checking each one manually for broken links would be tedious.

For WordPress sites, there’s a good plugin that will do the job for you.

The Broken Link Checker will check your posts, comments and other content for broken links and notify you if any are found. It even includes images. [DOWNLOAD HERE!]

After downloading, installing, and activating it, go to your Dashboard > Tools > Broken Links.

The plugin should now scan your entire site.

There’s an option to “Stop search engines from following broken links”, check that.

Click on the Status result to view the list of broken links.

You can now have the option of editing the URL or removing the link completely. You can also tag it as “Not broken” if it has been misidentified as broken.

It’s as simple as that.

Remember to practice this as part of your website maintenance.

Updating your pages regularly actually signals the search engine bots to crawl your site frequently. This helps you maintain good standings in their SERPs and outlast your competing sites.
