(No, we’re not related. I have not even met the man.)

Anyway, the article I was referring to is the one written by pinoymoneytalk titled “The 50 Top-Ranked Blogs in the Philippines“.

The big deal? This site is ranked #19 on that list. Yippee!

To rank that high among the thousands of websites here in the Philippines, even though this site is only 2 years old and to think that I’m not a full-time blogger is quite an achievement I must say.

(I help in making the Internet accessible to students of Mindanao as my day job by the way.)

I even ranked higher than the personal blogs of my blogging idols Marghil Macuha (#29), Sustines Laplana (#28) and Jehzeel Laurente (#25). Macuha’s news site Batangas Today is at #8 though.

The list was made according to each site’s Alexa rank – which is based on site visits, user pageviews, time on site, and search traffic stats, among others.

Because I’m on the list, I’m feeling generous today.

The top two keywords that brought traffic to this site for the year 2010 are facebok and facbook; both misspellings of our favorite social network.

With millions of Facebook users everyday, there are thousands who will search for it in a misspelled way.

Isn’t it annoying that at the end of the day, even if you got 100 clicks, you only made $1? Yes, one f*cking dollar!

Not all Adsense ads are created equal. The Adsense publishers that give you that low are usually those that have Adsense on their site too. They purchase ads through Adwords, have it published at other sites and when somebody clicks on it, they are brought to their own site that contains nothing but high-paying Adsense ads. In other words, they pay 1 cent in order to make 10 cents or higher.

Those are called MFA (Made for Adsense) sites. And it’s about time to get rid of those low-paying clicks.

Adsense actually has a built-in tool called the Competitive Ad Filter to help you with this.

The Competitive Ad Filter enables you to block specific ads, such as competitors’ ads, from appearing on your pages. Entering a more general URL will block a wider range of ads; entering a more specific URL will block a smaller range of ads. For example, by entering a top level domain such as “example.com”, you’ll also block all ads that link to any sub-directories of that domain, like “forums.example.com”. Review the examples below to learn how you can create filters that will block only the range of ads you want.

To access it, log in to your Adsense account > Adsense Setup tab > Competitive Ad Filter.

In the AdSense for Content filters box, you can enter those ads. Up to 500 is allowed.

So, how do I determine what ads to input?

You can register at Adsblacklist, enter your web site and get a list of  low-paying ads related to your site’s content.

If you want to avoid the hassle and don’t mind even if the ads are not related to your site’s content, you can just copy my list below:

Hit the Save changes button and you’re good to go. The changes should take effect in a few hours.

One word of caution though, it might be possible that due to many blocked ads, your site may show Public Service ads if no relevant ads are available.

Based on experience however, the benefits of using the Competitive Ad Filter far outweighs this consequence.

There have been countless success stories about bloggers who made money online because of Adsense.

I count myself as among them. But not anymore.

You see, this site got banned by Adsense on November 15. But instead of sulking over that, I consider this as an opportunity to look outside the box.

Adsense is not the only advertising network out there. Don’t put all your eggs into one basket.

What are other Adsense alternatives?

These are what I have been using and my one-month earning for each of them from November 16 to December 16, 2010:

1. CPALead – $291.15; this is a CPA (cost-per-action) type of advertising where you get paid when a visitor fills up a survey that converts into a successful lead before they can access your content.

CPALead is particularly good for movie and TV show sites. I plastered it on my pages that contain videos. However, in order to maximize earning potential, I suggest you make a separate site intended for it. This is a project I’m currently working on. It’s a good thing that some “ninjas” are willing to help.

Payment threshold is $50. You get paid through check or PayPal. You can register here.

2. Clicksor – $146.54; the advertising formats include inline text links, banners, graphical and rich media banners and pop-under ads. Payment for these ads may be on a CPC, CPV or CPM basis.

I use Clicksor for its interstitial ads (those ads that appear in-between pages). It pays on a CPV (cost-per-view) basis. So even  though nobody clicks on the ads, I still earn based on how many ad views I got.

What I like best about it is you get paid every 15 days (NET 15) as long as you reach the payment threshold of $50.  Payment is through check or PayPal. You can register here.

3. Chitika – $145.78; another PPC (pay-per-click) ad network similar to Adsense. The difference is that their ads only appear to visitors coming from the search engines especially those from US and UK. However, once you get approved as GOLD, you get to serve ads anytime.

The best thing about it is that the minimum threshold is only $10. However, payment is NET 30 (every 30 days).

Payment is through check or PayPal. You can register here.

4. Infolinks – $89.96; inserts text link advertisements (those double-underlined links) on this site. It is also PPC.

The minimum payout threshold is $100 where you can get paid through check or PayPal.

So, how much did I make in one Adsense-less month?

When you total my earnings from these four Adsense alternatives, I made $673.43 (P28,957.49).

That’s respectable enough but still a far cry from what I could have made with Adsense.

But still, I have proved that other advertising networks can pay for the bills too.

It also helped that I was able to cashout my Nuffnang earnings from August 1 – December 15 to the tune of P5,630.92. Nuffnang is good if you have lots of regional traffic as we have a Philippine-based Nuffnang.

Next step?

Aside from those four, I heard a lot of positive reviews from Bidvertiser and Adbrite too.

I have already registered and will conduct experiments in the next months using them.

I have tried Clickbank with no luck.  I only managed to make two sales for a total of $8.09 out of 8,577 clicks (or hops). That’s how bad I was at affiliate marketing.

I also intend to make a new web site purely for CPALead.

Final say?

Others may argue but Google Adsense is still the best advertising network there is.

So, I will rekindle my love affair with Google Adsense.

This time though, I will be careful and will avoid any TOS violation. I have already created a new niche site that went live 5 days ago.

Hopefully, my happy days with Adsense will be back again.

My love affair with Google Adsense began in August of last year when I first tasted Google juice in the amount of $159.58. Every month thereafter, I managed to reach the monthly threshold of $100 and was earning more than my day job income. I am even earning in 4-digits already!

Then, the inevitable happened. The ban hammer struck this site. What’s funny is I have been expecting it.

I have been receiving lots of emails and comments lately from bloggers who wonder why are they not seeing Adsense ads here, here’s the answer.

In an email sent to me last November 12 from Big G, I was told:

As stated in our program policies, AdSense publishers are not permitted to place Google ads on sites involved in the distribution of copyrighted materials. This includes hosting copyrighted files on your site, as well as providing links for or driving traffic to sites that contain copyrighted material. Publishers are not permitted to encourage users to click on Google ads in any way. This includes any implementation that may encourage accidental clicks, such as placing ads near flash games or navigation bars, or placing ads and site links extremely close together. As a result, we have disabled ad serving to the site.

I am guilty of those in bold letters.

As a sports and entertainment site, I have been offering streams of live sports events (especially pay-per-views) as well as movies and TV shows to my visitors. I know they are copyrighted materials and in violation of the Adsense Terms of Service (TOS), yet, I continue to serve them.

In the second violation, I have been placing text Adsense link ads in my menu bar. To the untrained eye, they might think they’re part of my site’s navigation when in fact it’s not. I also place Adsense link ads near videos and I even mask some Adsense image ads as the video itself to trick visitors to click them.

I have been flirting with these violations for months but I know some sites are doing it so my thinking was just, “Others are doing it, why can’t I?”

However, when your web site starts to gain traffic to the tune of 10,000 visitors daily and earns more than $100 daily, it sends a signal to Google to have someone from their personnel check your site’s content for any violations.

After I got the email, ad serving is actually not immediately disabled as I was given the chance to clean this site up. However, I become greedy and still proceeded to stream the Pacquiao vs Margarito pay-per-view match on December 13.

For the record, I made $628.20 from Adsense that day.

Two days later, the ads vanished!

From November 16 onwards, I’m back to earning cents. Yes, ad serving is only disabled here but not at my old web site, that’s why I still have the cents.

The first question that popped out in my mind was, “Will I still be paid for my October earning?” You see, earning for the current month are paid at the end of the next month. My October earning was my highest ever and I was worried (yes, I get worried too sometimes) that I’ll not be able to taste it. However, when I was given the Western Union MTCN on November 26, I felt like I just hit 5 numbers in the 6/55 Grand Lotto (wink wink, that’s a hint on how much I made that month).

My next question is, “Will I still be paid for my November earning?” That’s $1,388.57 from November 1 – 15 as you can see above (I could have made $2K.) I don’t know but I’m not losing any hope.

Now that my love affair with Adsense has ended, what are my options? Luckily, I still have eggs left in my other baskets.

While it has taken me 410 days to write the first 500 articles, it only took me 212 days for the next 500. That’s 2.36 per day.

Since my niche is about sports and entertainment which are pretty much loaded with tons of daily news, I can say that I seldom lack topics to write about. However, I usually only select those that generate the highest amount of public buzz. Trust me, even if you don’t make the first page of a search engine results page  (SERP) and as long as your article is already indexed, you will still gain significant amount of traffic to your site with the sheer amount of people looking for information on that day’s hot keyword.

As the 1,000th blog post, I want to share my sources on the articles I write as well as some tips.

1. As a huge fan of fighting especially mixed-martial arts and boxing, I visit the following sites for the schedule of upcoming sports events:

* Sherdog – MMA fights and results from UFC, WEC, Strikeforce and others

* UFC events (Wikipedia)

* About.com: Boxing

* WWE pay-per-view events (Wikipedia) – haha, of course I know it is fake, but I really like the theatrics. It’s called sports entertainment for nothing.

TIP: For upcoming events, it is usually a good practice to write about it NOT on the day of the event itself but at least 1 day BEFORE the event. That way, when people will be searching about it come fight night, your article is already in the SERPs. You can just update it later for the results when it has wrapped up.

2. Google Trends – it usually offers interesting keywords to make a blog post about. Its Hot Trends feature displays the top 20 hot or fastest rising search keywords entered by Google users in the US for the past hour. You can also check out its history feature if you like to know past hot searches for a specific day as well.

TIP: For more in-depth analysis of results, check out Google Insights for Search.

3. IMDB (The Internet Movie Database) – is an online database of information related to movies, television shows, actors, production crew personnel, video games, and most recently, fictional characters featured in visual entertainment media.

TIP: Its MOVIEmeter feature tells you the percentage of how hot (or cold) current and upcoming movies are. Of course, make articles on the ones with the highest rating.

4. Alexa – it gives free traffic metrics, search analytics, demographics, and more for websites. It also has a Hot Topics feature similar to Google Hot Trends. However, what I like best about it is that it can give me what are the keywords that brings in traffic to a particular web site.

I’ll site this website as an example. Here’s my Alexa site info. As you can see, it says that the top search query to this website is the keyword phillipino. While it is not necessarily true, that keyword definitely ranks among the top 100 keywords that brings traffic to this site. It’s a high-traffic low density (HITLOD) keyword.

So, now that you know that little piece of information, I encourage you to also make an article about it. As of this writing, I own the #1 spot in the Google SERP for the word phillipino.

TIP: Know what are the top web sites in your niche. By using Alexa, you will know their top search queries which can help you to generate some traffic for your site as well.

STATISTICS

1. My 499 posts since April 1, 2010 brought me 1,036,903 unique visitors and 1,537,455 page views for a daily average of 4,891 and 7,252 respectively.

2. For the month of August, I finally surpassed the 4-digit mark in Google Adsense earnings just for that month alone! I still remember one year ago when I only made $159.58 for my first 5 months of utilizing Adsense at this site.

3. Yes, it is possible to make $1,000 in only 1 day from Adsense. I thought this can only happen in my dreams but on October 24, 2010, I made $963.91. Yes, not exactly a thousand but its close. I attribute that unexpected amount due to the large amount of traffic I gained that day. Time and time again, it’s proven that when something sensational happens, people will flock the internet looking for information about it. Thanks Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez.

The twitter share and facebook share buttons I just recently integrated also helped. But that’s for another post.

ONE FINAL TIP:

If you can, publish at least one post every two days if you can’t do it daily. This will help your articles to be indexed faster by Google since its robots will be frequently crawling your site once it already knows that you update your site regularly.
