In fact, the spot he have held on for years has not been his since last year.
The record now belongs to Mexican Carlos Slim Helú who maintained his position in Forbes’ 2011 list of richest people in the world.
Here are quick facts about Facebook: it has more than 500 million users, 1 out of every 10 people uses it, the site handles 1.7 billion interactions a minute and almost 1 million new people sign up for Facebook every day.
And thanks to the critically-acclaimed movie The Social Network, we now know that it was created by Mark Zuckerberg.
Facebook has become a social phenomenon in a global scale that Zuckerberg was named today as Time’s Person of the Year for 2010.
At 26 years of age, he became the second-youngest individual ever to be given the honor. Only aviator Charles Lindbergh was younger when he was named Time’s Man of the Year in 1928 when he was only 25.
This has been the trend the past few days: changing your Facebook profile picture into a cartoon character.
Although the claim that it is supposed to boost awareness on the campaign against child abuse is being reputed, with some even saying that the entire scheme is a hoax, it did not stop Facebook users from having a little fun. It’s nostalgia time.
Some even changed their profile pictures daily into various cartoon characters from their childhood, from Bugs Bunny to Mickey Mouse to He-Man to Homer Simpson to Beavis and Butthead to Smurf to Scooby Doo.
Why is everyone changing their Facebook profile picture into a cartoon character?
That’s what I asked myself this morning when I logged in to my Facebook account and made the discovery.
Apparently, this Internet meme is supposed to boost awareness on the campaign against child abuse.
If you know how to use a computer and access the Internet, chances are, you also have a Facebook account.
It’s akin to owning an email address.
It has become so popular that it has already overtaken Yahoo! and YouTube and now sits as the second most popular web site in the world. The number one rank still belongs to Google of course. For how long will that remain is the only question remaining.
In fact, Facebook has more than 500 million active users in July 2010, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world!
But do you know who created Facebook? Of that 500 million, I bet less than 5% knows that.
Well, it’s Mark Zuckerberg guys. I bet less than 50% of that 5% knows how to spell that.
Whenever there’s a big fire or a road accident or a similar incident, we Filipinos usually flock to where the commotion is.
In local lingo, we are “usisero”.
I don’t know why but it’s just in our nature to be curious of what’s happening around us.
