This April 3, 2010 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Roy “The Terminator” Jones, Jr. and Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins meets in a rematch.
The pay-per-view event is titled The Rivals: Hopkins vs Jones 2 with the heading, “Who’s Gonna Get the Last Word?”
The rematch will be held 17 years after their fight on May 22, 1993. In the bout, Jones got his first world title when he beat Hopkins via unanimous decision (116-112 in all judges’ scorecards) to capture the IBF’s vacant middleweight title.
Since then, Jones has captured IBF championships in the middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions and voted “Fighter of the Decade” for the 90s by the Boxing Writers Association of America while Hopkins became the longest reigning middleweight champion defending his title a record 20 times and reigned supreme for 10 years while becoming the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.
On May 22, 1993, Roy “The Terminator” Jones, Jr. got his first world title when he beat Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins by unanimous decision (116-112 in all judges’ scorecards) to capture the IBF’s vacant middleweight title.
In the 90s and earlier this decade, Roy Jones Jr. was so dominant that he has compiled a 49-1 record with his only loss coming via disqualification against Montell Griffin. He even defeated John Ruiz by a 12-round unanimous decision for the WBA heavyweight championship becoming the first former middleweight champ to win a heavyweight title in 106 years.
For his efforts, he was named “Fighter of the Decade” for the 1990s by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
But that was a long time ago. At age 40, Father Time is finally catching up on one of the best pound for pound boxers ever. In his last 10 fights, 5 were defeats.
